The Policymaker is the Australia’s only publication dedicated to public policy ideas. Our authors address Australia’s big public policy challenges, drawing on their research insights and professional expertise.

Here are the top three reasons why The Policymaker should be the priority platform for your next article.

1. Influence public policy

The Policymaker is laser focused on contributing constructive ideas, recommendations and solutions for public policy challenges.

While eyeballs and clicks are important (and we certainly track them), our top priority is engaging an influential audience of political leaders and top bureaucrats. Our editorial process and communications strategy is focused on this relatively small but highly consequential audience of decision-makers.

Articles published on The Policymaker have directly influenced policy debates and government decisions. We know because we track the impact of articles through both formal citations and the diffusion of their ideas through public discourse and policy outcomes.

This makes The Policymaker an ideal platform to translate your research or professional experience into a pithy article that reaches a policy-focused audience.

2. Space to explain your ideas and research

We have designed The Policymaker to hit a sweet spot in terms of article length: long enough to properly analyse the problem and explain your proposed solution, but short enough to be easily consumed and have cut-through with time-poor decision-makers.

We’ll consider articles up to 1,500 words. Most newspapers and other digital publications will usually only publish op-eds and articles up to 800 words.

Often top-quality analysis and great ideas need space to thrive – that’s exactly what we provide on The Policymaker.

3. Collaborative editorial support for all authors

With a dedicated editorial and communications team of APPI staff, The Policymaker is an accessible and collaborative platform.

We provide detailed and rigorous feedback throughout the editorial process that maximises your article’s impact and reach. Our authors draw on their expertise and experience as researchers or policy professionals. We welcome contributions from authors at all career stages – from seasoned professionals to early career researchers and advisors.

After publication, our communications team actively promotes each article through professional channels. Most articles have ongoing relevance to policy debates, so we also look for opportunities to re-promote and re-package them for key audiences over the longer term.
